Firm Efficiency, Foreign Ownership and CEO Gender in Corrupt Environments
Jan Hanousek, Anastasia Shamshur and Jiří Trešl
To what extent does operating in a corrupt environment affect firm efficiency? The authors analyze a dataset of firms operating in 14 CEE countries over a 13 year period. They conclude that the operations of foreign-owned firms with female CEOs are the most negatively affected by corruption, probably because they have less of an inherent propensity to engage in corrupt behavior. Misclassification in Binary Choices
Bruce D Meyer and Nikolas Mittag
Biased results arising from misclassification of binary dependent variables are frequently pronounced. Is there a way to recover valid estimates of outcomes of economic interest from such contaminated data? The authors examine the properties of binary choice models with measurement error and the relative performance of different estimators that account for misclassification and produce more accurate results. The Impact of High-Stakes School Admission Exams on Study Achievements
Miroslava Federičová and Daniel Münich
How do admission exams for selective schools affect student achievement? Federičová and Münich exploit reforms in Slovakia to compare the performance of students subject to high-stakes admissions exams with those in the same grade when exams were given one year later. Performance improved among 10-year olds in the year tested, especially for math and among those with high expected performance. Read more

A Model of Focusing in Political Choice
Salvatore Nunnari and Jan Zápal
The authors develop a theoretical model of voter and politician behavior which assumes that the former focus unduly on certain policy attributes. This intensifies voter preferences, polarizes the electorate, and forces politicians to run on inefficient platforms. It also explains the negative correlation between income inequality and redistribution as well as the wave of pro-EU sentiment following the Brexit vote. Read more

How Stress Affects Performance and Competitiveness Across Gender
Jana Cahlíková, Lubomír Cingl, and Ian Levely
How men and women respond to stress and competition may partially explain gender differences in the labor market. The authors induce stress and examine how participants respond to competition in a laboratory experiment. They find that while competition improves the performance of men and women who are in a low-stress condition, it leads to worse performance among women who are under stress. Read more

An Advisor Like Me? Advisor Gender and Post-graduate Careers in Science
Patrick Gaulé and Mario Piacentini
The under-representation of female faculty in STEM subjects is an ongoing challenge. The authors consider the impact of same sex advisors on student productivity and career paths. Analyzing a dataset of 20,000 Ph.D. graduates from chemistry departments in the U.S., they conclude that women achieve better results and are more likely to remain in academia when a female advisor oversees their studies. Essays on Economics of Advertising
August 2017
Azamat Valei
Valei examines the role of advertising in markets with imperfect information and network externalities. He finds the incentives for a monopoly to advertise more likely when there is a negative network effect. Subsequent chapters consider an advertising game in a duopolist market and how incumbents change their advertising strategies in response to new entrants. Read more

Essays on Macroeconomic Models with Imperfect Information
August 2017
Volha Audzei
The author analyzes how imperfect information affects the predictions of macroeconomic models. Levels of market confidence, if based on imperfect information, may have unintended and unforeseen consequences with regards to risk attitudes and lending levels. Equally, central bank policy actions, such as low interest rates, may have limited or even negative effects if they fail to influence market sentiment. Read more

Monetary and Fiscal Policy in Small Open Economies
August 2017
Aliya Algozhina
The author studies the interactions and effects of monetary and fiscal policies in small open economies. Algozhina extends a typical New Keynesian model of a small open economy to add structural specifics calibrated for emerging markets, oil-exporting countries and resource-rich, low-income economies. The results suggest optimal combinations of policy applications for specific local economic conditions. Read more
